Research into Final Idea

We decided to choose 'Testing the Efficiency of Different Modes of Transport Travelling Across Brighton' as the final idea for our documentary. A similar style programme would be Top Gear.

Top Gear is a BBC television series about motor vehicles, which overtime has developed a quirky, humorous style; we are aiming to incorporate some similar humour in our documentary. Top gear features 3 main presenters (Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May); the same amount we are going to use in our production. Our documentary will be broadcast at the same time as Top Gear - 8:00pm . The show regularly features long distance (or as Jeremy Clarkson refers to them, "epic") races. These typically feature a presenter driving a car against other forms of transport.
Our chosen documentary is a challenge between three different modes of transport: a car, bicycle and a bus. This is going to be filmed along Brighton seafront and in the city centre (for the bus). In this test, we will measure what the most efficient type of transport is when travelling across Brighton.
When measuring the efficiency, we will look at: which mode of transportation is the most economical (which emits the least Carbon Dioxide emissions), which is quicker across the city and the type of travel that is the cheapest option.
Research into documentary and the 3 modes of transport being tested:

Distance of challenge:
· From Hove Lagoon to Brighton Marina – 4 miles

Bus:
· Brighton & Hove Bus and Coach Company Limited (Part of the ‘Go-Ahead Group’: The bus company gave us special permission to film on their buses. If we didn’t receive their consent, then filming would be restricted.
· One of the most successful bus services across the country – Awarded ‘UK Bus Operator of the year’ (2009) at the UK Bus Awards.
· They have a large fleet of around 280 buses; employing over 1000 people.
· Prices:
- Adult Single Fare: £1.80
- Adult ‘CitySAVER’ (whole day bus ticket): £3.60
- BusID (only for 5 – 18 yr olds) weekdays: £0.90
- BusID weekends: £0.50

Car:
· Volkswagen Polo (2008)
· Emissions class: EURO5
· Grams of Carbon Dioxide emitted per kilometre driven (g/km): 139 g/km. (volkswagen.co.uk)
· The average for all cars is 175 g/km and the highest emitting car is the Lamborghini Murcielago at 500 g/km! (carpages.co.uk)

Bicycle:
· Approximately 5% of all journeys in Brighton & Hove are by bicycle.
· Brighton was chosen as 1 of 6 places chosen as ‘Demonstration Areas’ by Cycle England. It is a ‘Cycling City’ – designed to provide safety to all cyclists.
· The city was given £1.5 million over 3 years to promote cycling and this sum was actually matched by the city itself. As a result of this, Brighton & Hove has over 40km of cycle lanes. (guardian.co.uk)
· Brighton is the only UK partner in a European Project to secure funding via the Civitas+ Partnership. This project secures £2.5 million for Brighton & Hove during 2008 – 2011.
